- Abstract
According to World Health Organization (2009), sedentary lifestyle is the 4th biggest world mortality risk (6%) and the 5th bigger precursor of incapacity in the post-industrialized world (Jenkins, 2007). Researches made in Europe, Canada and USA showed that children and adolescents spend an average of 8-9 hours a day in sedentary behaviors, more than 50% of the time they are awake, mainly on TV, computer and videogames (Colley et al., 2011; Matthews et al., 2008; Verloigne et al., 2012). Tremblay et al. (2011) verified that excessive screen behaviors (>2 hours a day) are associated with unfavorable body composition, physical fitness reduction, self-esteem reduction, pro-social behavior reduction and a decrease of academic results, in children and adolescents aged between 5-17 years old. Interrupting sedentary behaviors is a promising prevention strategy for reducing cardio-metabolic risk and to counter sedentary dangers (Owen et al., 2011; Belcher et al., 2015; Healy et al., 2008). This program is focused on gamers (>2 hours playing per day) aged between 12-18 years old, and the goal is to successfully join this sedentary behaviors, happiness, wellbeing and health, showing how to counter the dangers of screens behaviors. The program is based on Self Determination Theory (SDT: Deci & Ryan, 1985), providing the necessary information about this issue and several tools and activities, promoting the fulfillment of the three Basic Psychological Needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) and the autonomous motivation, which leads to better motivation, wellbeing and adherence. Its duration is 6 months, assessing the target group at the beginning and at the end of it with Basic Psychological Needs Exercise Scale (Moutão et al., 2012) and BREQ (Palmeira, Teixeira & Markland, 2010). It is expected to change the target group lifestyle in a healthier way, adopting new manners while they are on the sedentary behaviors.
