- Abstract
The present article identifies the Latvian painters and their artworks, whose content or formal concept represents the aspects of Latvian traditional religion - Dievturiba. The present paper is based on research concerned with individual artists who have attempted to express the ideas of Dievturiba movement in their painting. Not all of the considered artists were enthusiastically supporting the ideas of Dievturiba; however, in their creative and art works these ideas are expressed and displayed. The author attributes great importance to the analysis of the mutual context of Dievturiba as a traditional religion and painting based on its ideas. The ideas of Dievturiba revealed in the works of different artists appear not only in the content of their works, but they have significantly affected their formal style. Each of the represented artists has developed a different framework or set of religious imagery. All artists have used in their works ancient images with specifically Latvian marks, ornaments, and symbols, but the variations of their combinations are greatly diverse, thus they do not constitute a homogeneous system. It should be noted that in Latvian folk songs and national legends, the religious characters are attributed to several and different tasks and areas of activities. Accordingly each character can be described with different signs and symbols revealing a great diversity of colors and the use of symbols. Referring to this variety, one can talk about iconic images created by individual artists, but not about common imagery of Dievturiba iconography.
